[04:58:33] + Gentoo ked, Why on earth would you want to play proprietary games?
[04:59:15] + Gentoo ked, You like a genre enough to surrender your freedom over?
[04:59:46] + Gentoo Probably not, as you seem to love surrendering it, but that's not a reason to surrender more
[05:00:53] + Gentoo Jihad against "open source"!!!!!!!
[05:01:04] + Gentoo Plenty of free software games exist right at the moment.
[05:01:43] + Gentoo Well no, as that's a specific game that no proprietary game replicates either.
[05:02:01] + Gentoo Grand Theft Gentoo intended to replace GTA, but it wasn't completed.
[05:03:09] + Gentoo ked, Piracy is theft, murder etc, with the assistance of a boat, so unauthorized copying is not piracy.
[05:03:49] + Gentoo ked, An unauthorized copy of proprietary malware is still proprietary malware, plus you don't have the source, or even if you do, you can't legally use such, so such doesn't give you free software.
[05:04:28] + Gentoo ked, No, as that takes years and the resulting source is under the same license as the original, that is, proprietary.
[05:04:57] + Gentoo ComputerTech, Yes, you are welcome to not provide free software unless you are paid for it, but you can't restrict the freedom of the users that have received the software after payment.
[05:05:27] + Gentoo The topic being spoken of doesn't "consume" anything but electricity typically.
[05:05:52] + Gentoo Yes, with free software, you can actually own the software.
[05:06:03] + Gentoo With proprietary software, you can never actually own it.
[05:07:05] + Gentoo The game story really doesn't need to match the game in real life.
[05:08:00] + Gentoo Copyleft is a tool in the toolbox of eliminating proprietary software, rather than being a mere "alternative" to it.
[05:08:51] + Gentoo Every work is copyrighted by default now and it's not trivial and I'm suspecting not even possible to surrender your copyrights.
[05:09:02] + Gentoo Music is not a functional work and listening to it doesn't "consume" it.
[05:10:19] + Gentoo With music, it's not big deal if it's proprietary, as I can just choose not to listen to the music and I'm not restricted just because I listened to the music. Nobody tries to force music onto people unlike proprietary software either.
[05:11:24] + Gentoo I don't believe in the idea, I'm working to eliminate proprietary software step by step.
[05:11:37] + Gentoo It's going to happen, no matter how the proprietary software companies seethe.
[05:13:29] + Gentoo A lot of free software is so good that even proprietary software companies want to use it. If that free software is under the GPLv2 or GPLv3, the companies are welcome to use it, they just can't make the software proprietary.
[05:14:26] + Gentoo "proprietary infrastructure" really isn't a think.
[05:14:53] + Gentoo If you don't run the software yourself, that software is neither free nor nonfree for you - such service has other issues though.
[05:16:19] + Gentoo "Google" uses a lot of GPLv2 and GPLv3 software on their servers, as that software gives them the freedom to host things properly, but that's their servers, so what software they run isn't your concern. The problem is what those servers do.
[05:17:42] + Gentoo The servers do a lot of spying on the users, so that's the problem, but the spying is not because of the software - "Google" could probably spy just as well with their inhouse software.
[05:19:13] + Gentoo Hardware isn't usually directly linked to software, but there is the freedom to repair.
[05:20:20] + Gentoo A lot of companies have made hardware that restricts what software the user can run. The GPLv2 attempts to fix such issue, but wasn't very successful. The GPLv3 managed to fix the problem mind you.
[05:21:13] + Gentoo Such hardware can make free software effectively proprietary, as even though they give you the source code, when you try to install your modifications, the hardware can refuse to execute such software.
[05:22:16] + Gentoo Linux is only one of the kernels of the GNU OS and it's actually proprietary software.
[05:22:30] + Gentoo You need GNU Linux-libre for a non-proprietary version of Linux,.
[05:23:18] + Gentoo It's important for hardware to exist that can operate without any proprietary software. Having GNU/Linux installed out of the box is a nice to have, but no OS at all installed is fine, provided it's feasibly to install GNU/Linux onto such.
[05:24:05] + Gentoo Hardware is proprietary by definition, as it needs to be manufactured. You can have free hardware designs under the GPLv3, but those designs will result in a proprietary computer unless you manufacture it yourself from scratch.
[05:25:03] + Gentoo Hardware freedom sadly doesn't exist yet (there are no 3D printers that can construct computer hardware), but when it does, it will be as important as software freedom.
[05:25:37] + Gentoo The current thing that's important is that hardware is usable with only free software, and for some inane reason, the pool of hardware seems to be shrinking.
[05:25:59] + Gentoo Manufacturers used to actually tell you how to use the hardware by providing you hardware documentation.
[05:26:27] + Gentoo Now it seems that most do nothing like that - they give you a piece of buggy, proprietary firmware and tell you to shut up.
[05:27:57] + Gentoo Such proprietary firmware is very hard to replace with free software, but is typically possible to replace via hard work and reverse engineering. Of course, a bunch of manufactures have decided to make even that impossible, by placing a signature on the firmware and making the hardware refuse to run any firmware not signed by them.
[05:28:16] + Gentoo The intel ME is what makes any intel hardware past 2008 impossible to run with only free software.
[05:29:29] + Gentoo I'm currently on crappy intel computer, but I did run ME cleaner on my BIOS. I'm working on replacing it with a KGPE-D16 which runs libreboot.
[05:30:26] + Gentoo I replaced my server with a KGPE-D16 as well. It's good to have a server with reasonable clock drift.
[05:30:41] + Gentoo I have a librebooted thinkpad as well.
[05:31:47] + Gentoo You pretty much just need to dump the BIOS from the SPI chip, run me_cleaner on it, and flash it back.
[05:32:25] + Gentoo AMD has the PSP, which is better in some ways and worse in others. There is no known way to disable the PSP, aside from setting a BIOS option that you "certainly" can trust.
[05:33:10] + Gentoo Anything Ryzen is not supported by coreboot, as AMD refuses to provide hardware documentation. The only choice now is a proprietary version of AGESA.
[05:33:57] + Gentoo Intel "supports" coreboot on newer boards by providing a bunch of proprietary software that does the hardware init etc and that coreboot pretty much just calls.
[05:34:47] + Gentoo You probably won't find a thinkpad in a dumpster that is librebootable.
[05:35:11] + Gentoo Any thinkpad with a Chiclet keyboard is not librebootable, as the ME is not removable.
[05:36:23] + Gentoo The newest line of thinkpads aren't even corebootable at all, as it seems that a BIOS signature restriction has been enabled. In order to coreboot those ones, you need to replace the CPU with a CPU that hasn't has restricting fuses burned.
[05:37:40] + Gentoo The golden system to coreboot is the KGPE-D16, with libreboot.
[05:38:01] + Gentoo You can get 32 cores via 2 16 core CPU's, but it's a desktop.
[05:38:27] + Gentoo You also need to construct your own CPU fan bracket, as nobody sells G34 CPU coolers anymore.
[05:39:11] + Gentoo RAMinit is still problematic, but dasharo has improved it a bit and that will eventually be backported to libreboot.
[05:41:27] + Gentoo If you want to drop 1500+ pounds, you can get a ready librebooted board, with RAM and 2 CPU's and cooling fans: https://store.vikings.net/en/VKGS-WORK-D16
[05:42:26] + Gentoo If you have more money than sense, you can buy a much newer POWER9 system from here: https://www.raptorcs.com/ (did the KGPE-D16 coreboot port before)
[05:43:21] + Gentoo I myself dropped ~$200USD on 2 board from China and ~80USD each for 3 16 core Opteron CPU's.
[05:44:19] + Gentoo These 2 chinese boards have the BMC backdoor soldered onto the board (it's meant to be slotted), so I had to remove such with a soldering iron and plyers.
[05:44:24] + Gentoo *pliers
[05:45:13] + Gentoo DIY is best unless it's cheaper to buy ready made.
[05:46:01] + Gentoo I found that buying a ready librebooted thinkpad was cheaper than doing it myself for some reason (only because it seems you can't get decent thinkpads anymore).
[05:47:02] + Gentoo I can't remember really, about $470USD?
[05:47:33] + Gentoo It's a lot for such old hardware that doesn't even have a 1080p screen.
[05:48:04] + Gentoo The old thinkpads are actually capable out outputting 1080p, but they were never shipped at that resolution.
[05:48:25] + Gentoo For newer thinkpads that can't be librebooted, it's viable to do a screen swap.
[05:48:55] + Gentoo For older ones, you kind of have to figure out which kind of screen that'll fit of the wanted resolution and also figure out how to connect the ribbon cable,.
[05:49:08] + Gentoo *you'd kind of have to
