[01:51:04] Grumblebee I find it difficult to believe that sci fi authors are intrinsically more likely than fantasy to do that though. I know tons of great fantasy series.
[01:56:20] Grumblebee This is sounding a lot more like personal preference, where you want stories, but maybe most sci fi fans are more interested in the world itself than any of the characters.
[01:56:33] Grumblebee I doubt it's because of the "fathers" of it.
[01:56:45] Grumblebee There are tons of writers that just want to write and largely do their own thing, taking very little inspiration.
[01:57:11] Grumblebee It would also be just as easy for someone that wants to write sci fi to take inspiration from tolkien.
[01:58:34] Grumblebee Oh, yeah I think I agree there. Classic sci fi is y'know, dated too. Less developed and likely better fit the social climates of the time as well.
[02:07:18] Grumblebee I liked some of Herbert's stuff when I was a kid but I was so young when I read it.
[02:07:26] Grumblebee I do remember caring more about the ideas presented than the characters though.
[02:12:06] Grumblebee I read more of his small stuff, like 'The Jesus Project' and 'The Godmakers'.
[02:12:31] Grumblebee More bite sized approaches to little philosophical things.
[02:15:16] Grumblebee Yeah I adored those when I was younger. I feel like if you're writing a story to explore a hypothetical or a concept then y'know. The complexity of the concept damn well better reflect the length of the book.
[02:15:36] Grumblebee And some do require huge stories, especially when you're digging into like, very real and growing social issues, because those are incredibly complex.
[02:15:37] Grumblebee But most don't.
[02:16:01] Grumblebee Some of them are incredibly complex, rather.
