[00:29:15] kot you don't? much more comfortable that way
[01:32:21] kot PapaFrog have you read foundation
[01:33:03] kot ive read like 5 or 6 of the foundation series and they all sucked ass
[01:33:33] kot it's early sci-fi by a bad writer
[01:33:54] kot maybe his robot series is better but asimov is a total hack
[01:38:24] kot sci-fi has a huge problem of sacrificing engaging story telling for the sake of being a cut and dry dystopia or utopia narrative
[01:39:03] kot no problem if you wanna do philosophical fiction but if you can't tell a good story, it would've been better as an essay
[01:40:13] kot orwell has the same problem imo, 1984 & AF are only notable for being early dystopia narratives about authoritarianism as a response to stalinism
[01:41:31] kot 1984 is a little more interesting because a closer read shows how orwell was trying to push the idea of "i think a good form of socialism can exist but it cannot be authoritarian". other than that, they're both bad novels.
[01:43:04] kot all of 'em?
[01:43:48] kot the last one i remember was the mule one, do you think it's worth reading onwards and finishing the rest of the series?
[01:44:20] kot damn that sucks
[01:45:58] kot the later dune novels are also shit but at least they have the benefit of being weird as fuck at points
[01:49:07] kot it really sucks that most sci-fi series have the issue of 'only the first novel is good, maybe the second, and maybe the fourth or fifth one but only because it's absurd and not because it's good'
[01:50:16] kot i think authors just blow their load on putting all their good ideas in the first novel and subsequent novels are either cashgrabs or lamely exploring the world that has already been set up and reconning when you're in a corner
[01:54:28] kot fantasy novels tend to focus more on fun storytelling than sci-fi. sci-fi tries too hard to be allegory in a speculative setting where fantasy is usually just fun worldbuilding and character drama.
[01:55:32] kot i think it's because the father of sci-fi is asimov where the father of fantasy is tolkien
[01:57:18] kot it's more about classic SF / F, contemporary sci-fi is usually a bit more fun
[01:58:03] kot the murderbot diaries for example has more focus on being engaging and fun with a little bit of allegory
[02:00:59] kot LeGuin and Bradbury are the only classic sci-fi writers i enjoy so far
[02:01:21] kot i should check out octavia butler as well, I've heard good things
[02:06:42] kot haven't read enough of PKD to say for sure, I've only read VALIS so far which is probably a bad start
[02:07:42] kot i have the library of america collection of PKDs novels so i should probably start from the beginning so his personal brand of schizophrenia is gradually introduced
[02:08:04] kot rather than in full force like in VALIS
[02:11:19] kot herberts dune is kinda fun but it doesn't a strike a good balance of serious / fun because the later novels are too dumb and absurd to take seriously but they are also too long, dry, and self-serious to be fun. they're only fun for the occasional weirdness but you're putting up with hundreds of pages of dumb shit just to get to the funny stuff
[02:13:28] kot yeah sci-fi short stories are usually a bit more enjoyable because full sized novels rarely feel like they deserve their length
[02:14:26] kot where as a novella or short story is perfect to explore some speculative hypothetical without trying to expand it into a whole ass world spanning multiple thousands of pages
[20:12:51] kot certain people are more liable to take the crass and pervy humor too far and personal
[20:14:01] kot also most people in here are decent enough to stop when told a joke goes too far
[20:51:47] kot gravity is a just a made up theory by big science to keep you down, man
