[11:48:07] elcasey !bang
[11:48:14] elcasey wtf
[11:48:21] elcasey how am I level 1?
[11:48:44] elcasey well obviously
[11:48:47] elcasey hehe
[11:49:19] elcasey mmmm cricket burgers
[11:49:46] elcasey thank you for your participation in democracy, citizen. Enjoy your protein ration.
[11:54:01] elcasey not overjoyed about having toi watch this shit for work - https://youtu.be/PpbxSBgkEYk
[11:54:31] elcasey ComputerTech: do all this CyberArk shit for me because I hate it
[11:55:05] elcasey ComputerTech: secrets vault, really Windows-centric (at least it HAS an API now)
[11:56:50] elcasey you don't have to be on Windows to interact with it. I'm not gonna write them Windows stuff. I just need to be able to interact with their garbage via API
[11:57:27] elcasey and I have to do a good job because it's important and I am doing my boss a huge favor and he is a quality bloke
[11:59:25] elcasey ugh these people do not have a modern automation mindset at all (both CyberArk and this client). They are a bunch of sysadmins that think writing powershell scripts is automation.
[12:01:04] elcasey like "oh yeah a human logged into 4 different servers, started a GUI CyberArk session, and then logged into a Windows box and ran a script directly on it, we're automated as shit now, guys"
[12:01:47] elcasey it makes me sad (and then they had a major security incident, sadly helped by my own company's service desk people, and they broke all of this intentionally)
[12:04:27] elcasey ComputerTech: so basically I will have sour news for all these Windows admins we have there, which is that they are gonna have to learn how to work in a real DevOps environment, because that is what *I* do and that is what I'm gonna build! ;P
[12:05:43] elcasey well for now I have to build this mess on Azure DevOps (which would be mega-gag but it's still yaml and bash so whatever) but as soon as they will give me access to GitHub Enterprise I'll port it over to GitHub Actions
[12:06:25] elcasey and then if they wanna run stuff in windows, go for it, here's a template using "windows-latest" instead of "ubuntu-latest". Do your thing. Ain't really my problem at that point :P
[12:08:51] elcasey ComputerTech: but it's starting to become less about the tech and more about how they need to change their culture. I will start drifting into wanky sales and management speak here, but they are massively siloed internally, they don't communicate across teams, and everything is just trying to solve their own problems without any strategy coming from the tech leadership at all
[12:08:54] elcasey (that I have seen so far).
[12:10:00] elcasey They buy tools for huge sums of money (let's use Splunk as an example), it doesn't solve all their problems magically, so then they buy another tool. And there is still no strategy. No unified vision for "what good looks like." So they will just spend tens of millions on being very very mediocre. And it doesn't have to be that way!
[12:18:17] elcasey ComputerTech: I just really care about my work, that's all. Which is a fantastic feeling! :)
[12:19:59] elcasey good morning!
[12:21:33] elcasey ComputerTech: I've used Ubuntu for almost 20 years now but I mostly work with Red Hat in my work. Ubuntu is easiest for me to use, even though I'm not always wild about the things Canonical does (but they are a business and they need to turn a profit, I get it).
[12:21:52] elcasey I don't have time or desire to use gentoo hehe but good on the folks who do
[12:22:50] elcasey I use Debian for some things, like small services that I basically plan to never touch once they're installed and configured (like my pi-hole DNS servers - I can upgrade the service but I don't want a bunch of package upgrades on the OS)
[12:23:05] elcasey it's a good un
[12:23:28] elcasey I think they've done a lot of good work to bring Linux to a lot more people (I first used Linux in 1998 but it was never my daily driver until 2006)
[12:24:38] elcasey dunno probably not, haven't done a dist-upgrade. I did a clean install of Kubuntu 24.04 a few months back on this workstation I mostly use. It has some bugs (snap is a piece of shit in general so I just quit using it - bug solved :P). But overall pretty stable.
[12:24:51] elcasey Nvidia drivers were a pain and latest was continually broken but I got that working
[12:25:03] elcasey vk2bio: like what, just out of curiosity?
[12:25:36] elcasey vk2bio: like I enjoy the fact that my last two clients have "required" Azure Virtual Desktops to access their internal stuff, because AVD works fine on Linux in the web RDP client :D
[12:26:32] elcasey vk2bio: ah ok, I don't even know what those tools are, so makes sense if they are very specific. I have a Windows gaming machine. I don't like Windows but I'm not "doing Windows," I login, open Steam, and run games. Just path of least resistance!
[12:27:34] elcasey ComputerTech: was never major issues on most stuff, and I am not a "latest AAA title" gamer, but it was small annoyances. I might give a full cutover another shot one day. But while I can still run Win 10, I will leave it alone.
[12:27:49] elcasey I will *not* be going to 11 (or 12+) on my personal network. Not happening.
[12:28:04] elcasey yep my work laptop is 11
[12:28:18] elcasey it's fine when your whole enterprise is on Azure AD anyway (for SSO)
[12:28:31] elcasey but I am not gonna login to an online MS account just to access my personal machine
[12:29:00] elcasey I use web browsers, Office, and VS Code to do my job so it isn't so bad for me
[12:29:50] elcasey I was a Windows sysadmin for a good 15+ years of my career and I literally hated every minute of it. I was miserable and I wanted out of IT entirely. Then I somehow got a job as a DevOps engineer xD (but I was already retraining myself and getting Linux certs and got AWS Solutions Architect)
[12:30:30] elcasey vk2bio: interesting that you're using a more minimal version of the OS
[12:31:19] elcasey I love talking this kinda shit so thanks for making my morning, lads :D
[12:31:46] elcasey vk2bio: I was surprised to find that now if you don't install the Desktop Experience you literally get Core as the default
[12:32:34] elcasey was gonna try to convert my Plex installation over to a Windows Server VM. What a f'ing nightmare. I left it on my Windows gaming box. It has the best GPU I own. It works for now. Whatever.
[12:33:12] elcasey i mean do you need to?
[12:33:27] elcasey at least GPUs are no longer a mortgage payment
[12:33:35] elcasey they were when I bought my 4070 Ti *rolleyes*
[12:33:54] elcasey to me anything over 60 is wasted ;D
[12:34:22] elcasey true!
[12:34:43] elcasey if you have a 240Hz monitor it literally won't run unless you can hit 240fps
[12:34:46] elcasey >_>
[12:35:14] elcasey I never got into CS:S but man I played the shit out of the original back ... omg it really is 25 years ago now *sigh*
[12:37:11] elcasey even back in 00-01 when the 12yr old bunny hoppers overran CS, that was the end for me. I was a huge Rainbow Six player too so I was into realism/milsim
[12:38:05] elcasey Civ 1 was my *first* game on IBM PC (I had Atari and Apple IIGS prior) that I bought with my own money. 5.25" floppy. Still probably my favorite game of all time if I had to choose only one.
[12:38:21] elcasey yeah it requires a lot of patience (ARMA) :D
[12:38:49] elcasey but man the firefights can get so intense, it is very worth it to me (but I haven't played for a few years now)
[12:38:55] elcasey ^
[12:39:19] elcasey #spergsesh is a more accurate channel name this morning hehe
[12:39:36] elcasey :D

[12:46:19] elcasey well, just a rock and roll guy. not just metal.
[12:46:48] elcasey nice!
[12:47:13] elcasey that's my zone right there, classic metal. AC/DC, Priest, Maiden, Scorpions, all that sort
[12:47:48] elcasey I don't dislike this song so much, but the first 3 minutes is not great to me :P
[12:47:52] elcasey literally the same thing
[12:48:09] elcasey then finally he drops in some interesting bits
[12:49:42] elcasey this is quite good. and very australian :D
[12:50:10] elcasey i love how absolutely SHIT their frontman's haircut is, it has to be intentionally ironic
[12:50:51] elcasey I have to share this with my mate, he's more like modern Swedish metal guy but he might like this
[12:51:30] elcasey ok Chats followed on Spotterfeh
[12:52:22] elcasey cracking
[12:52:58] elcasey unfortunately I need to get on a meeting soon
[12:53:13] elcasey also I'm shit at chess and you would severely embarass me but ONE DAY yes I will play you
[12:53:47] elcasey metsu: they say it's never too late
[12:53:58] elcasey I lived in hope for many years
[12:54:38] elcasey vk2bio: just noticed that the album is titled "GET FUCKED" xD
