[09:57:18] Gentoo/rizon Even if the socket is the same, the southbridge does specific things. It really shouldn't be hard to just make a decent southbridge design for once and then use it for everything - but that wouldn't allow for a socket change a year.
[09:58:22] Gentoo/rizon I remember, one of the reasons FireWire was killed was because "Apple" was too greedy and wanted $1 per firewire port per computer for a patent license. The previous contractual arrangements were that you needed to pay $50,000 into the firewire group and then you didn't need to pay anything more.
[09:59:07] Gentoo/rizon "Apple" of course broke such contract. "Intel" couldn't be bothered to make them follow the contract and so decided to go with usb.

[10:01:37] Gentoo/rizon ECC should have been a standard feature of RAM since a decade ago, but every related company decided that's only for servers and overcharge accordingly.
[10:02:21] Gentoo/rizon With the density of DDR5 approaching physical limits, error checking and correction was pretty much a hard requirement.
[10:03:18] Gentoo/rizon But they didn't just implement ECC - they implemented some error checking and correction, but no way to report corrected errors or errors that couldn't be corrected. Such features are only available on more expensive ECC types.
[10:04:29] Gentoo/rizon ECC DDR3 is really the sweet spot - it's <=$20 for 8GB sticks now and there's libre DDR3 RAMinit for the KGPE-D16.
[10:06:14] Gentoo/rizon It's kind of hard to find highly clocked DDR3 ECC though - but really the speed of DDR3 is plenty adequate.
[10:08:01] Gentoo/rizon If I remember correctly, proprietary software on the RAM was one of many things preventing Raptor Computing systems from making say the Talos III for POWER10 based CPU's.
[10:09:10] Gentoo/rizon Ideally there should be none, but they do happen. ras-daemon-ctl hasn't deteced any ECC errors the last time I checked, so I'm not 100% sure ECC is working, but hopefully I'm just lucky.

[10:15:56] Gentoo/rizon It adds 1 cycle in latency, but being able to add much more RAM is worth it. You can still use UDIMM on servers, but not much.
[10:18:11] Gentoo/rizon I believe the reason ECC is so rare is computer manufacturers are so stingy that they don't want to add an extra memory chip for the recovery/parity bits.

[10:21:04] Gentoo/rizon We live in a dystopia, but not the cool kind - the kind like eating noodles in the rain at Chinatown. No manufacturer will make good hardware - they always fill it up with proprietary software to the wazoo and expect you to buy a new one every year.
[10:23:12] Gentoo/rizon They shill recycling, but we really can't recycle computers. Any "recyclers" go and take the worn capacitors off the board for resale (as new of course) and then shove the boards into an acid bath to recover the precious metals. The rest goes into landfill.
[10:24:52] Gentoo/rizon I'm going to have to get a few more KGPE-D16's to last me, but for long term, it looks like the future will have to be free hardware designs running of fast FGPAs.
