[05:02:48] Nimko Hey guys since you all have been on the internet a lot longer than I have what ways do people usually end up getting doxxed on the internet? I know people can look up your IP but what exactly do they do to figure out where you live and stuff?
[05:04:44] NiniGeo2 From what I've seen it's almost always a case where the target user uses the same username on multiple websites, so the doxxers find another one of their accounts and scrape together information from multiple accounts to attempt to piece together where somebody lives.
[05:05:17] Nimko Huh
[05:05:19] NiniGeo2 If any of those accounts is a social media account, those often include a lot of "where you are" info in terms of general location descriptions and any photos or videos that you post tend to have location information embedded in them also.
[05:05:38] Nimko interesting I see
[05:05:50] Nimko I always thought it was like a data breach thing
[05:06:20] NiniGeo2 Possibly, if the data breach happened on a given website then that could be an extra source of info for the doxxers to use to be able to combine with other stuff.
[05:06:20] Nimko like they find your ip or email in a databreach
[05:07:46] Nimko So would the best course of action would be to keep the information you use to interact with people limited?
[05:08:33] Nimko Like any social media you enjoy you use a new and specific email/password/username
[05:08:39] Nimko *use
[05:09:01] NiniGeo2 Yes I would recommend using a unique username for each website that you use as a safety measure against doxxing.
[05:09:08] Nimko ugh *Like any social media you use to interact with people
[05:09:18] NiniGeo2 You still have to follow "common-sense" practices like not publically disclosing your real info as well.
[05:10:13] Nimko You have known anyone who was doxxed before?
[05:10:43] Nimko I know this IRC so I'd think there would be a lot of old internet drama and hacking on this older networks I guess
[05:11:12] NiniGeo2 It's especially difficult with social media I think because many of those websites are run with the assumption that users who are connected on the social graph also have some connection in real life, and if you have real life connections to folks it's difficult to not disclose or know your real name and location.
[05:13:41] Nimko I see. places Facebook seems to invasive even to me
[05:14:44] Nimko In order to have an account they actually have to verify your identity which is kinda extreme to me to be honest
[05:15:31] Nimko but I guess connecting to real people is the point of it I guess
[05:16:32] NiniGeo2 Mmhmm, the connection to real world other people is definitely a big part of the draw, it's also where the risk comes from!
[05:19:31] Nimko yeah definitely seems that way lol
[05:19:37] NiniGeo2 Mmhmm~

[06:14:01] Nimko oh
[06:14:08] Nimko weird
[06:14:10] tr_ [T] <+login> however, anyone with IP logs can associate those if you use the same device
[06:14:48] Nimko are people with your ips able to tell what websites you've visitied?
[06:15:03] Nimko like where your IP has been
[06:15:16] tr_ [T] <+login> each website, if they keep a log of who's accessed them, has that information for their own website's visitors
[06:15:32] tr_ [T] <+login> another way would be through DNS
[06:15:44] Gul_Dukat I just pulled a sneezy bizbomb.
[06:16:26] tr_ [T] <+login> your ISP would know, but so would the DNS server your computer uses to translate the domain name to the website's ip address
[06:16:51] Nimko hmmm
[06:16:52] tr_ [T] <+login> most VPN apps would also route your DNS queries through the vpn
[06:17:31] tr_ [T] <+login> and if you don't use DNS over HTTPS or DNS over TLS, then your DNS queries would be in plaintext
[06:17:58] tr_ [T] <+login> i.e., any router on the path between your computer and the DNS server will be able to associate your IP address with the website you're trying to visit
[06:18:11] Nimko ohhh okay I see what HTTPS and TLS is supposed to do know
[06:18:25] Nimko the S part is to mean that it secure for your DNS right?
[06:18:34] tr_ [T] <+login> yeah, using encryption
[06:18:35] Nimko or something like
[06:19:05] Nimko I've been to websites where my browser would warn me that it doesn't use HTTPS but just HTTP
[06:19:20] tr_ [T] <+login> in that case, even the contents of the website would be transmitted over plaintext
[06:19:41] Nimko So where exactly does the danger of that come in?

[06:20:37] tr_ [T] <+login> yes, the hoster of the website can see your IP address and what you're doing on the site (if they track it), Nimko
[06:21:00] tr_ [T] <+login> The danger is that there are governments that are definitely tracking DNS queries and IP addresses
[06:21:32] tr_ [T] <+login> And others who want to doxx you could do it too
[06:22:14] tr_ [T] <+login> With your ip address, they could find a way to get through your firewall too, if they're sophisticated enough or if you've allowed inbound connections (which is usually not the case except if you're running a server at home)
[06:22:51] Nimko so if someone had my IP and just so happened to know what website I've been on and that website also had happend to not be secure with HTTPS, they would be able to see what I did on there?
[06:23:06] tr_ [T] <+login> yeah
[06:23:15] tr_ [T] <+login> well, not 'see', but know
[06:23:34] tr_ [T] <+login> they could, if they had a device in between, even modify the content of the website and you wouldn't know
[06:23:53] Peorth this is highly unlikley
[06:23:58] tr_ [T] <+login> correct ^
[06:24:01] Peorth especially with the prevalence of HTTPS/HSTS
[06:24:17] tr_ [T] <+login> but the premise was 'happened to not be secured with HTTPS'
[06:24:29] Peorth ah so it was.
[06:24:33] Peorth I didn't see that part :p
[06:24:48] Peorth its too late, I should probvably be sleeping
[06:24:53] Angel Peorth meant to say: its too late, I should probably be sleeping
[06:24:53] Peorth s/bv/b
[06:25:06] tr_ [T] <+login> Yes, you should be provably be sleeping
[06:25:21] tr_ [T] <+login> But they'd have to, if not modifying what was sent to you, know what the website was sending back and reverse-engineer that
[06:25:55] Nimko I also heard that with IPs they can do something(?) with the ports and get access? tr_
[06:26:00] tr_ [T] <+login> but the biggest risk is something on your own computer spying on you
[06:26:11] Nimko sorry my client only gives tr_
[06:26:27] tr_ [T] <+login> it should say tr_ <+login> my actual message
[06:27:02] tr_ [T] <+login> But yes, if you have an open port on your computer, they could send information to it from the outside
[06:27:08] tr_ [T] <+login> if they had your ip address
[06:27:29] tr_ [T] <+login> and if the software was buggy, could gain the ability to do whatever that software is allowed to do on your computer
[06:27:38] Peorth my ip address is 192.168.1.6
[06:27:40] Peorth uwu
[06:27:40] tr_ [T] <+login> Zoom got in trouble for this
[06:27:50] tr_ [T] <+login> Peorth: lol
[06:27:52] Nimko ohh I see
[06:28:06] tr_ [T] <+login> that IP address is in the reserved range for local area networks
[06:28:18] Nimko Yeah lots of zoom bombing in 2020 and 2021 lol
[06:28:20] Nimko but
[06:28:26] tr_ [T] <+login> Not even Zoom bombing
[06:29:02] tr_ [T] <+login> But that Zoom was creating a server during installation, and that the server had a bug that allowed outsiders to, by crafting the right information to send to your ip address at Zoom's port, do everything Zoom could do on your computer
[06:29:11] Peorth 'm lying btw
[06:29:18] tr_ [T] <+login> ^ i wouldn't be able to tell
[06:29:25] Peorth my real ip is 127.0.0.1
[06:29:33] Nimko ohhhh yeah isn't what they call remote code execution? tr_
[06:29:37] tr_ [T] <+login> yes
[06:30:33] tr_ [T] <+login> 127.0.0.1 is the loopback address, which is just used to refer to oneself without leaving the local area network
[06:31:05] tr_ [T] <+login> Isn't it interesting that the original advice on the internet was, don't use your real name
[06:31:15] tr_ [T] <+login> And then the advice is, don't use an email address that is *not* your real name
[06:31:38] tr_ [T] <+login> And now many people put all their real information and face and photos on the internet
[06:31:45] Nimko hrmm would the best course of action be to get a specific router that isn't just the standard one by the ISP and get those open source firewalls softwares on Github?
[06:31:50] tr_ [T] <+login> Especially if they want to gain employment
[06:31:51] Nimko tr_ yeah true
[06:32:13] Nimko I never had much of a presence on the internet
[06:32:16] tr_ [T] <+login> You could get a Pi hole, which could sit in between your ISP's router and all your other connections
[06:32:25] Nimko Pi hole?
[06:32:36] tr_ [T] <+login> A raspberry pi computer that acts as a firewall
[06:33:06] Nimko O_o I thought a firewall was just software on the router already or something like that
[06:33:15] tr_ [T] <+login> Yes, the router itself also has a firewall
[06:33:19] tr_ [T] <+login> But so does your computer
[06:33:34] tr_ [T] <+login> And they're software
[06:33:42] Nimko ohhhhhhh sorry I'm being stupid
[06:33:50] Nimko like Windows Firewall
[06:33:55] Nimko right
[06:33:57] tr_ [T] <+login> Yes
[06:34:19] tr_ [T] <+login> Even your phone has a firewall
[06:34:54] tr_ [T] <+login> But it wouldn't help much, especially if you already block inbound connections (which most firewalls do)
[06:34:59] Peorth YOUR COMPUTER IS BROADCASTING AN IP ADDRESS
[06:35:02] Peorth \o/
[06:35:11] tr_ [T] <+login> is it broadcasting it?
[06:35:41] Nimko hmmm so what could you do with multiple firewalls together? tr_
[06:36:16] tr_ [T] <+login> it's like multiple layers of swiss cheese
[06:37:30] Nimko So your normal router isn't the end all be all? if someone gets past your router's firewall wouldn't don't they kinda have everything?
[06:37:58] Nimko like since its connects to your computer and everything else

[06:42:49] tr_ [T] <+login> Gaining remote access past your router's firewall would be something that would be the end all be all
[06:43:48] Nimko I see interesting
[06:43:59] Nimko what would a pi-hole do?
[06:44:08] Nimko well prevent I guess
[06:45:05] Nimko Ah i see now
[06:45:40] Nimko Your computer wouldn't be connected to the router but to the pi-hole
[06:46:09] Nimko so if they got past your router firewall it would be the pi-hole's turn
[06:48:33] tr_ [T] <+login> yes
[06:48:50] tr_ [T] <+login> but many isp routers don't allow you to 'bridge' the router with the pi-hole
[06:49:33] tr_ [T] <+login> and there would be a question of how to make wifi go through the pi-hole
[06:50:00] Nimko is there a solution to it?
[06:50:55] Nimko ah sorry I read your post wrong lol
[06:51:29] Nimko so I SHOULD get a another router rather than my ISPs standard ones
[06:53:46] tr_ [T] <+login> but many ISPs won't let you configure another router that way
[06:54:26] Nimko wow
[06:55:33] Nimko hm if I ever decided to get fiber optic plans from my ISP does that changes things?
[06:56:19] Nimko I feel it may not but I'm just curious because I thought about getting them one day
[06:58:59] tr_ [T] <+login> yes, that makes it harder
[06:59:23] tr_ [T] <+login> you would have to find out how to make the ISP think your router is their router
[07:00:23] tr_ [T] <+login> You'd have to find out about the TR-069 protocol
[07:01:43] Nimko O_o woah
[07:02:23] Nimko I assumed it was just faster connection that required some physical installation cause the cables are different and whatever
[07:03:59] Nimko so firewalls and pi-holes would be even more difficult? Are most ISPs known to lock things down so much (outside of censorship)?
